Made to measure leather jackets, at no extra cost, on every style in the catalog. You pick the jacket, choose Made to Measure instead of a stock size, and send eight measurements. The pattern is drawn to those numbers, the jacket is cut and stitched by hand, and it ships free. A tailor made leather jacket normally means a fitting, a deposit and a long wait. This is eight numbers at checkout and five to seven days in the workshop.

Nothing is cut before the order, so making a jacket to your measurements costs us the same as making it to a stock size. That is why there is no charge for it.

The eight measurements

Use a soft tape, stand straight and keep the tape level. Wear a t-shirt, not a sweater, and do not pull the tape tight. If you can, have someone else take them.

  • Chest. Around the fullest part, under the arms and across the shoulder blades. Breathe normally.
  • Natural waist. The narrowest part of the torso, usually an inch or so above the navel.
  • Lower waist. Where the jacket hem will sit, roughly where the waistband of your pants sits.
  • Hips. Around the fullest part, feet together. This matters on longer jackets and coats.
  • Shoulder. Across the back, from the bone at the edge of one shoulder to the other.
  • Sleeve. From the shoulder bone to the wrist bone, with the arm relaxed at your side, not straight out.
  • Height. Without shoes.
  • Weight. Used as a cross-check against the rest, so the pattern is not drawn from one mistyped number.

Inches or centimeters both work, as long as you say which. If a measurement looks wrong against the others, we email before cutting rather than guessing.

An easier way to get the fit right

Measure a jacket you already own and wear, laid flat and zipped, and send those numbers with a note saying they came off a garment rather than a body. Chest across the front doubled, shoulder seam to shoulder seam, sleeve from the shoulder seam to the cuff, and the length down the back from the collar. For a lot of people this is more reliable than measuring themselves, and it carries across the ease you already know you like.

Who it is for

Anyone a stock size has never worked for. Long arms with a narrow chest. Broad shoulders with a short body. A tailored leather jacket for women that closes properly at the waist without straining across the hips. Anyone who is between two sizes and has already been through the ordering both and returning one routine.

It is also worth it on the jackets where fit is structural rather than cosmetic. On the men’s shearling jackets and the aviator jackets there is wool inside the shell, so a stock size that is slightly small stops being a style choice and starts being uncomfortable. On the women’s biker jackets and the cropped jackets, where the cut is close and short, an inch in the wrong place is the whole look.

There is no separate tailor made price list. The jacket costs what its product page says, whichever way it is cut.

What you get

The leather is sheepskin, lambskin, cowhide, goatskin suede or shearling depending on the style, and each product page names its own. The zips are YKK. The jacket is stitched by hand rather than run down a line, which is where the five to seven days goes.

Before you order

A jacket cut to your measurements cannot be returned because the fit is not what you hoped. It was made for one body and fits nobody else, so it cannot go back into stock. It can be returned if it arrives damaged or defective. Standard sizes carry the usual 30 days from delivery, unworn and with the tags on.

So take the measurements twice, or send the numbers off a jacket that already fits you. If anything is unclear, email before you order and someone will go through it with you.

How long does a made to measure leather jacket take?
Five to seven days to make and six to seven days to ship, so eleven to fourteen days from order to delivery.

Can I change the design as well as the fit?
The measurements are what the form takes. For anything beyond that, email info@theleathermaker.com and ask before ordering.

What if I measure wrong?
If a number looks inconsistent with the others we will email you before the jacket is cut. Once it is cut to your numbers it cannot be returned for fit.

Do you make tailored leather jackets in plus sizes?
Stock sizes run XS to 3XL, and made to measure has no size range at all. It is cut to whatever you send.

Can I send measurements after checkout?
Yes. Email them with your order number and nothing is cut until they arrive.
