The A-2 was adopted by the US Army Air Corps in 1931 and became the jacket of the World War II bomber crews. Ninety years later the pattern hasn’t needed improving — which is why we still cut ours to the original shape.

The leather. Real cowhide in cognac brown, a warm reddish tan that reads richer in daylight than it does on screen. Cowhide is the heavier, tougher choice compared to goatskin or lambskin: it takes longer to break in, but it holds its shape for years and develops a genuine patina at the elbows, shoulders and cuffs. This is real hide, so small variations in grain and tone between jackets are normal — not defects.

The build. YKK zipper at the front and on every pocket. A shirt-style collar that sits flat under a coat or turns up against wind. Rib-knit cuffs and waistband seal in warmth and keep the silhouette clean. Two pockets outside, two inside — enough for phone, wallet, passport and keys without printing through the leather.

The lining. Smooth viscose, full body, so it slides over a shirt or a light knit without dragging.

The fit. Classic military cut — trim through the chest with room in the shoulders for movement. Our sizes run about one step larger than standard US sizing, so go by your chest measurement in the size guide below rather than your usual letter.

Each jacket is cut and stitched to order in our workshop, then checked before it leaves us. That’s why it takes a few days longer than a warehouse jacket — and why the seams are still holding in year five.

SIZE GUIDE

Our sizes run about one step larger than standard US sizing. Match your own chest measurement to the “To fit chest” column below rather than picking your usual letter.

Size To fit chest Garment chest (flat) Shoulders Sleeve Waist (flat) Back length
XS 36–37″ 21″ 18″ 25.75″ 19.5″ 25.5″
S 38–39″ 22″ 18.5″ 26″ 20.5″ 25.5″
M 40–41″ 23″ 19″ 26.25″ 21.5″ 26.5″
L 42–43″ 24″ 19.5″ 26.5″ 22.5″ 26.5″
XL 46–47″ 26″ 20″ 26.5″ 24.5″ 27.5″
2XL 48–49″ 27″ 20.5″ 26.75″ 25.5″ 27.5″
3XL 50–51″ 28″ 21″ 26.75″ 26.5″ 28″

All measurements in inches. Garment measurements are taken flat — armpit to armpit — so a 21″ flat chest equals a 42″ chest around the jacket. The “to fit” column allows the standard 5–6″ of movement room over your body measurement.

How to measure

  1. Chest — around the fullest part, under the arms, tape level. Wear a t-shirt, not a sweater. Don’t pull tight.
  2. Shoulder — from the seam on one shoulder straight across the back to the other.
  3. Sleeve — from the shoulder seam down the outside of the arm to the wrist bone, arm slightly bent.
  4. Back length — from the base of the neck to where you want the hem to sit.

Between two sizes? Take the larger one — leather doesn’t stretch across the chest the way knitwear does.

Not sure? Email your chest measurement and height to info@theleathermaker.com and we’ll tell you which size to order.

CARE

  • Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth after wear. Never soak it.
  • Condition with a quality leather conditioner every 6 months — more often in dry or very cold climates.
  • Caught in rain? Hang it at room temperature and let it dry naturally. Keep it away from radiators, heaters and hair dryers — direct heat cracks leather permanently.
  • Hang on a wide or padded hanger. Wire hangers dent the shoulders.
  • Store somewhere breathable. Never seal leather in a plastic bag.
  • Never machine wash, tumble dry, or use a non-specialist dry cleaner.

Scuffs, softening and colour deepening at the elbows and cuffs aren’t damage — that’s the jacket becoming yours.

FAQ

Is this genuine leather or faux? Genuine cowhide. No PU, no bonded leather, no synthetic blend.

How long until it arrives? Your jacket is made to order. We cut, stitch and check it within 5–7 days, then shipping takes a further 6–7 days — so most orders arrive within 11–14 days. Tracking is sent as soon as it ships.

Does it run true to size? It runs about one step larger than standard US sizing. Measure your chest and match it to the “To fit chest” column in the size guide. If you plan to layer a thick sweater underneath, take the next size up.

What if the size is wrong? Return or exchange within 30 days of delivery, provided the jacket is unworn with tags attached.

Will it keep me warm in winter? The cowhide blocks wind well and the rib-knit cuffs and hem stop draughts. For real cold, layer a sweater underneath.

Does the colour rub off? No. The leather is dyed through, not surface-painted. The cognac will deepen and develop character over time, which is normal for real hide.
